2017 Next Mile Scholarship Winners

Kelsey Adams

Kelsey Adams recently graduated from Bowie High School in Bowie, Md., and will study exercise science at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md. In high school, Kelsey was awarded a medal for graduating in the top 5% of her class and a captain’s award from her softball team. Kelsey’s father, William Adams, works at a MileOne location in Silver Spring, Md.

 

Ashlie Alves

Ashlie Alves will graduate from Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa., in May of 2020 with a degree in psychology. She graduated from Dallas High School in Dallas, Pa., where she was an honor roll student. Ashlie served as captain of Dallas Cheer and was an All American Cheerleader. She has also received the Dallas Foundation Award for Volunteer Service. Ashlie’s father, Michael Alves, works at MileOne in Wilkes Barre, Pa.

 

Christina Angell

Christina Angell is currently enrolled at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Md., and plans to attend Stevenson University in Stevenson, Md. for a Bachelor of Nursing degree. She graduated from Towson Catholic High School in Towson, Md. Christina’s husband, Eugene Kenneth Angell, works at MileOne in Westminster, Md.

 

William Baker

William Baker graduated from Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Va., where he was an All-Conference First Team Center in football and a Chesapeake Scholar Athlete. He was also honored for serving more than 1,500 hours of community service and received a medallion for a 4.0 GPA. He attends James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and studies business. William’s father, William Baker, works at MileOne in Virginia Beach, Va.

 

Jordan Banks

As a student at Milford Mill Academy in Baltimore, Jordan Banks was a State Merit Scholastic Award winner, member of the National Honor Society and International Baccalaureate program and an AP Scholar. She will study psychology at University of Maryland, College Park in College Park, Md. and graduate in May of 2021. Her father, Rodney Banks, works at MileOne in Towson, Md.

 

Lauren Banks

A graduate of Pikesville High School in Pikesville, Md., Lauren Banks studies interior design at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. Lacrosse, interior design and travel are among her interests. Lauren’s father, Robert Banks, works at MileOne in Owings Mills, Md.

 

Lance Binning

Lance Binning studies engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in Catonsville, Md. He was the recipient of the Quality Champion Award from Toyota for quality service in the entire Mid-Atlantic region. Lance works at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

 

John Blevins

John Blevins recently graduated from North Harford High School in Bel Air, Md., as a Maryland Scholar. He plans to study information technology at Harford Community College in Bel Air and graduate in May of 2021. John works at Saubel’s Market in Whiteford, Md., and Kohl’s in Forest Hill, Md. John’s father, Gordon Blevins, works at MileOne in Owings Mills, Md.

 

Taylor Brannon

As a student at Chesapeake High School in Baltimore, Taylor Brannon was on the honor roll and a member of the National Tech Honor Society. She also received the sport, English and criminal justice awards. Taylor now studies criminal justice at Hood College in Frederick, Md., and will graduate in June of 2020. Taylor’s father, Kareem Abdul Taylor, works at MileOne in Owings Mills, Md.

 

Jennifer Burris

Jennifer Burris studies applied kinesiology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., and will graduate in April of 2018 with a master’s degree in human performance. She is currently interning in Old Dominion University’s student-athlete development program. As a student at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., Jennifer played Division I field hockey. She graduated from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach. Her father, Buddy Burris, works at MileOne in Virginia Beach, Va.

 

Justin Champ

Justin Champ studies finance at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and will graduate in May of 2019. He is a graduate of Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va. Basketball, weight lifting and studying the stock market are among his many interests. Justin works at MileOne in Chesapeake, Va.

 

Micaela De Guzman

 

Micaela De Guzman studies physical therapy at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach and will graduate in May of 2020. She graduated from Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, Va., and volunteers at Sentara Leigh Hospital. Traveling and photography are among her many interests. She works at MileOne in Virginia Beach, Va.

 

Jeffery Evans

Jeffery Evans studies civil engineering at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and will graduate in December of 2018. He graduated from Smithfield High School in Smithfield, Va., and has held an internship with McLean Contracting Company. Jeffery’s father, Jeff Evans, works at MileOne in Virginia Beach, Va.

 

Cortnee Filling

Cortnee Filling studies secondary education at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Md., and will graduate in December of 2018. She graduated from Patterson Mill Middle High School in Bel Air as a Maryland State Scholar and a recipient of the Presidential Scholar Award. She was also a member of the Social Studies Honor Society. She is a part of the youth worship team at Grace Assembly of God. Cortnee’s father, Ronald Filling, works at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

 

Steven Gruner

Steven Gruner graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md., and now studies sports and entertainment management at University of South Carolina, Columbia. He will graduate in May of 2020. There, he is a Dean’s List student, member of USC Sigma Psi Mu Professional Business Fraternity and involved in intramural sports. Steven’s father, Dave Gruner Jr., works at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

 

Cody Hall

Cody Hall attends the Community College of Baltimore County Essex in Baltimore and will graduate in November of 2018. He is a graduate of Perry Hall High School in Perry Hall, Md. In his free time, he enjoys working on and painting cars. Cody’s father, Gregory J. Hall, works at MileOne in Baltimore.

 

Megan Hamilton

 

Megan Hamilton graduated from Reservoir High School in Fulton, Md., as the recipient of the AP Scholar with Honor Award, Outstanding Senior Award and Director’s Award. She was actively involved in her high school’s theatre department and volunteered at her church. In her free time, she enjoys playing guitar and singing. She will graduate in May of 2021 from Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pa., with a degree in occupational therapy. Megan’s father, Richard Hamilton, works at MileOne in Annapolis, Md.

Tammy Harris

Tammy Harris studies nursing at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md., and will graduate in May of 2020. In her free time, she volunteers at Veteran Affairs. She works at MileOne in Towson, Md.

 

Miles Hollimon

Miles Hollimon is pre-med at Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., and will graduate in June of 2021. He is on the track and field team at Davidson. As a student at Franklin High School in Reisterstown, Md., he was a member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. Miles’ father, Michael Hollimon, works at MileOne in Reisterstown, Md.

 

Cade Hudson

Cade Hudson graduated from Hereford High School in Hereford, Md., where he was a Maryland State wrestling finalist and a participant in the J. Robinson Wrestling Program and FITS Wrestling Academy. He will graduate with a degree in psychiatry from York College of Pennsylvania in York, Pa., in June of 2021. His father, James Hudson, works at MileOne in Lutherville, Md.

 

Margarette Hudson

Margarette Hudson is a U.S. Army veteran who is studying nursing at Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville, Md. She will graduate in December of 2018. She is also a Bridget McGrath Memorial Nursing Scholarship recipient. Her husband, James Hudson, works at MileOne in Lutherville, Md.

 

Tanner Jones

Tanner Jones graduated from Catonsville High School in Catonsville, Md., and will study recreation and sports management at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. He will graduate in May of 2021. Tanner plans to play intramural or club sports in college. His father, Brad Jones, works at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

 

Kasia Kane

Kasia Kane studies aerospace engineering at University of Maryland, College Park and will graduate in May of 2021. As a student at Patterson Mill High School in Bel Air, Md., Kasia was an academic mentor and part of team management for men’s volleyball and lacrosse. She also was a recipient of the President’s Academic Award, Award for Achievement in Technology and nominated for Women of Tomorrow. Her father, Kory Kennedy, works at MileOne in Baltimore.

 

Blair Kreh

Blair Kreh is a rising freshman at Hood College in Frederick, Md., where he will study biology and chemistry. He is a graduate of Middletown High School in Middletown, Md., and received a State FFA degree from his local Future Farmers of America chapter. Blair also earned the 2017 Outstanding 4-Her award and had the 2016 Grand Champion Rabbit at the Great Frederick Fair. He works as a geriatric nursing assistant/certified nursing assistant at Vindobona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Frederick. His father, Richard Kreh, works at BMW of Silver Spring, Md.

 

David Lee

David Lee attends University of Maryland, College Park, where he studies education and will graduate in June of 2018. David, an aspiring science teacher, is a substitute teacher at Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Md. He also is an intern at the University of Maryland’s Master’s Certification Programs (MCERT). He is a graduate of Marriotts Ridge High School in Marriottsville, Md. David’s father, Yong Lee, is an employee at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

Sean Lippincott

Sean Lippincott is a rising freshman at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C., where he will study microbiology. Before attending Clemson, Sean was a Dean’s List student at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Md. He graduated with honors from Century High School in Sykesville, Md. Sean’s father, Andrew Lippincott, works at MileOne in Silver Spring, Md.

 

Jordan Louk

Jordan Louk is a Dean’s List student at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Va., and will graduate in May of 2018 with a degree in social work and sociology. She is the captain of her college’s dance team, receiving an award for best choreography/skit in 2017. She graduated from Indian River High School in Chesapeake, Va. Jordan and her mother, Erin Louk, are employees of MileOne in Virginia Beach, Va.

Scott Morgan, Jr.

Scott Morgan Jr. attends Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Pa., where he will graduate with a degree in collision repair in June of 2019. He graduated with honors from Southwestern High School in Hanover, Pa. He used to race JR Dragsters, but is now working to get his father’s Mustang in race condition and is rebuilding his 1966 Mustang. His father, Scott Morgan Sr., is an employee at Mercedes Benz of Owings Mills in Owings Mills, Md.

Ali Morsy Jr.

Morsy Jr. is a rising freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he will be studying information science in the Scholars Program. He graduated with honors from Howard High School in Ellicott City, Md., where he was a member of the National Honor Society and a senior officer of the Future Business Leaders of America. In his free time, Ali volunteers with FIRN. His father, Ali Morsy, is an employee at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

Ariednarelis Padilla

Ariednarelis Padilla will graduate from Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah in December of 2018 with a degree in management and leadership. A Puerto Rico native, Ariednarelis graduated from Lino Padron Rivera High School in Vega Baja.  She recently received multiple Commissioner’s Citations for work excellence at the Social Security Administration. In her free time, she enjoys baking, cake decorating, artistic painting and handcrafts. Her husband, Javier Padilla, works at MileOne in Catonsville, Md.

Hailey Poisal

Hailey Poisal studies history and education at Hood College in Frederick, Md., and will graduate in May of 2019. She is a member of the field hockey team, the Feminist and the Queer Student Unions, and the Student Education Association. She has made the Dean’s List every semester of college and has received the Outstanding Achievement in Statistics Award. Hailey is a graduate of Westminster High School in Westminster, Md. Her father, Steve Poisal, works at MileOne in Owings Mills, Md.

Caleb Rodriguez Pagan

Caleb Rodriguez Pagan studies HVAC & energy technology at the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville, Md., and will graduate in June of 2018. He is a graduate of Old Mill High School in Millersville, Md. Caleb works at Audi Porsche of Silver Spring in Silver Spring, Md.

Joshua Rystedt

Joshua Rystedt will graduate from Concordia University Wisconsin in May of 2020 with a theology degree. He’s a Dean’s List student and earned his Lay Ministry Certificate. Joshua owns two businesses, Rystedt Creative and Brew for You. He is a graduate of Carroll Christian Schools in Westminster, Md. Joshua works at MileOne in Towson, Md.

Kursten Sawyer

Kursten Sawyer is a freshman at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., where she studies communication sciences. She is a graduate of Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City, N.C., where she received numerous academic awards, including A/B Honor Roll, SAT Awards and honors cords. Her stepfather, Darryl Bennett, works at MileOne in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Caroll Sion

Caroll Sion studies elementary education at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., and will graduate in June of 2021. In her free time, she enjoys visiting museums, art galleries and national parks with her sons. She is a graduate of Northwestern High School in Adelphi, Md. Caroll works at MileOne in Silver Spring, Md.

Zoe Stallings

Zoe Stallings will graduate from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., in May of 2020 with a business degree. She is a member of Alpha Phi Omega and the co-editor of her college’s literary magazine. Zoe also has an internship at the Smithsonian Institution. She graduated from Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Va. Her father, Charles Stallings, is an employee at MileOne in Chesapeake, Va.

 

Sierra Strothers

Sierra Strothers is a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., and will graduate in May of 2021 with a degree in biology. She hopes to one day be a doctor. She graduated with honors from Bethel High School in Hampton, Va. Her mother, Rachel Strothers, works at MileOne in Newport News, Va.

 

Jessica Sucgang

Jessica Sucgang studies nursing at Sentara College of Health Sciences in Chesapeake, Va., and will graduate in May of 2020. She enjoys spending time with her children and family in her free time. Nathan Sypniewski

Nathan Sypniewski will graduate from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Catonsville, Md., in May of 2021 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is a graduate of North County High School in Glen Burnie, Md., where he was an AP scholar and made the Honor Roll every year. He was also a member of Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. His stepmother, Alessandra Bowers, works at MileOne in Parkville, Md.

 

Collin Vest

Collin studies mid-level education/math at Clarion University of Pennsylvania in Clarion, Pa., and will graduate in May of 2018. He is a highly decorated diver, being named an eight-time All-American, a three-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) DII one-meter diving champion, a two-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Male Diver of the Year and a one-time NCAA DII three-meter diving champion. He is also a three-time honoree of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. He is a graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth, Pa. His father, Vincent Vest, is a MileOne employee in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
