Al Fischer and Frank Higgs Celebrate 30 Years at Imports

One of the big initiatives that CEO Steve Fader is launching this year is a Milestone Recognition Program. The corporate and divisional leadership teams appreciate and respect the dedication and loyalty that countless employees have shown during their lengthy career at MileOne. Two in particular, Master Volkswagen Technician Al Fischer and Master Technician at Subaru Frank Higgs have been with Subaru/Volkswagen Owings Mills for 30 years and were willing to chat about their time at Heritage.

What got you into the automotive industry?

Frank: I’ve been working on cars since I was about 12 years old. There was a used car lot right around the corner from my house and I used to go over and help the guy who owned that.

Al: A neighbor got me working on Volkswagens when I was 18 years old and the place I worked for – Jerry’s – used to have Volkswagens so it was an easy transition progressing from a hobby to a career.

What brought you to Heritage?

Frank: The dealership that Alan and I worked at before (we’ve been working together since 1985) wasn’t very nice or supportive – when we heard this place was opening up there was a lot of appeal to it. I started at the Volkswagen store with Al, but when it couldn’t support multiple technicians and Subaru was overworked, I said yes to transferring over.

Al: When word spread that there was a new dealership opening I was intrigued. Like Frank said, the place we were at wasn’t that supportive, so even though it was a lot longer commute (we had previously worked in Bel Air, and I lived around the area), it was worth the switch.

What has made you stay here for 30 years?

Frank: Steady flow of work, and I love the work I get. Back in the day when Jerry was around, he treated me really well. I know Scott a bit, and really respect him as a leader. I actually used to work on Jerry’s wife’s car. I used to call Jerry “slick” because he always had on the slickest suits.

Al: The work and the people. I’m never bored.

What is the best part of working at Heritage?

Frank: The people – they’re nice, supportive and passionate. Jerry and I used to have a great relationship – him and Scott are like family – and I really like our new service manager, John.

Al: The dealership is convenient to where I live and the guys I work with are a good group of guys.

How has your life changed from when you first started?

Frank: I’ve raised 3 children and have 4 grandchildren. I’ve lost a lot of hair and somehow matured through the ages.

Al: I have a son and a daughter, who I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve also gotten slower – but slow and steady wins the race!

What are you most proud of in your career at Heritage?

Frank: Working for a store with such a good reputation.

Al: How far I’ve come and how long I’ve worked here being able to do something I really enjoy.
