Georgetown University Hosts Silver Spring GM for Panel Discussion

Earlier this month, Porsche Silver Spring General Manager Jim Gordon took part in a panel discussion at Georgetown University discussing entrepreneurism in the automotive industry. The group, which included around 100 high school seniors with interests in pursuing entrepreneurship and business at Georgetown, learned about key aspects of the automotive industry including ownership, industry trends and insights.
“It was an interesting session,” Jim said. “The kids were all taking a summer course at Georgetown on entrepreneurism in general. Their teacher’s friend happened to work for Audi Corporate. She brought him in for the panel along with myself and two other representatives from local car dealerships.”
With over 35 years of experience in the automotive industry, Jim was delighted to have the opportunity to share his knowledge and insights.
“We were asked everything from how one starts in the auto industry, to how to become an owner of a car dealership, and with my background the conversation came up about how it was like working with family members,” Jim reminisced. “What I found interesting was the attention that the female panelist received from the young women in the audience. They were very interested to learn how a woman becomes a leader in the car industry.”
The main message that Jim tried to instill in the students before leaving was there are multiple paths to becoming successful in the car business; there is no one type of person who fits the mold, or one path that works better than another. According to Jim, the one thing you have to have is passion.
