Succeeding in the Industry as a Female Technician

Kate Strumsky has always loved cars. Her passion was passed down from her father, a master mechanic, as she spent many days in her formidable years in the garage tinkering away at whatever he would let her touch. She loved taking things apart and seeing how they worked, then putting them back together and making them work again. With the idealism of youth, she knew she wanted to turn her passion and love for cars into a career.

It wasn’t easy, but she accomplished this lifetime goal. Kate started working at the Toyota Owings Mills dealership this past May. Starting a new position always bring challenges, but starting a new job in a male-dominated industry can be incredibly difficult for a woman.

“I was really nervous coming into a shop made up of all guys,” Kate said. “You never know what the preconceived notions of a female technician are going to be; if they’re going to be able to accept the work I do. It was a relief to realize I had nothing to worry about; the guys here are fantastic. They made it such a comfortable atmosphere for me and a great place to come into work every day. They were all incredibly helpful when I started, and continue to be to this day. I’m so happy I came to Toyota.”

This acceptance comes from the top – Kate said that both Jan Braverman, Parts Director, and Tony Pulignani, Service Manager have encouraged her to continue her education, and are part of the reason she is currently enrolled in the CCBC Automotive Program earning her 2-year degree.

“All of the managers here are great, but Jan and Tony really make an effort to better their employees. They check in every few weeks to make sure I’m comfortable and ask how things are going, both at work, school and home.”

After finishing her degree, she’ll have an Associate’s Degree in applied sciences. Going to school and working full time is not an easy schedule – especially while also planning a wedding (Kate’s fiancé also works at the Toyota Service Center)!

“I work from 7-5 and go to school from 6-10 pm,” she said. “It’s a really tough schedule, but I love it. The two experiences complement each other so well – at school I get to sit down and think about the science and the “how” behind what I’m doing, whereas at work there’s the hands-on, real-world element.”

Kate is excited to apply for the 2018 MileOne Scholarship Program to help further her career aspirations. According to Kate, the benefits MileOne has to offer are another reason to love this company.

Although she is accepted by her coworkers and superiors, there are still instances of extreme gender bias from customers. “At first, it got to me because I didn’t have the thick skin I do now,” Kate said, “but it’s only one person’s opinion. As long as I’m doing well in my boss’s eyes and feeling good about what I’m accomplishing, it’s a good day.”

Her advice for other women in the industry? “Don’t be scared. If you like it, you like it. I am very fortunate to be in a shop with so many techs who are so accepting of me. Don’t let the people who don’t think you should be here affect you. If you want to do it, you’ve got to jump in.”
